Research Triangle Park.RTI International is currently seeking qualified
applicants to fill the position of Epidemiologist/Statistician, for the
Tanzania Vector Control Scale up (TVCS) Project, part of a large regional support program funded by the US President Malaria Initiative (PMI) through USAID.
This position will be based in Zanzibar and duration of employment is
one (01) year contract which may be renewed depending availability of
funding.
Overall Purpose:
The Epidemiologist/ Statistician will be responsible to lead
coordination, implementation, documentation and evaluation of malaria
surveillance activities in Zanzibar as planned in collaboration in
Presidents Malaria Initiative (PMI) and Ministry of Health through
Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program (ZAMEP). She/ he will be responsible for overall technical guidance and supervision of the malaria epidem ic early detection systems (MEEDS),
Malaria Case Notification and malaria epidemic preparedness and
response. This involves advanced epidemiology knowledge, advances
statistical analysis of surveillance data, capacity to operate computer
databases, knowledge to design electronic. data collection using mobile
devices. He/ She will also coordinate with the Senior Epidemiologist and
ZAMEP Surveillance, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit to ensure provision of adequate technical support on malaria surveillance.
Key Responsibilities:
To work with Zanzibar Malaria Elimination programme (ZAMEP) and partners on the following:
1. Support implementation of malaria surveillance systems
• Provide supervision for the implementation of MEEDS and MCN system
• Support documentation of surveillance activities and maintain performance standards for surveillance
• Support development and updating of malaria surveillance guidelines and protocols
• Support development and updating of training curriculum,
materials and conduct training to build malaria surveillance capacity to
the national and district teams
• Undertake routine internal evaluations of surveillance systems in keeping with best practices.
2. Data analysis, mapping and reporting
• Undertake routine and special analysis of malaria surveillance data from the HMIS, MEEDS and MCN systems.
• Support routine production of maps of surveillance data and programmatic activities
• Provide support for analysis of ZAMEP programmatic activities, including: indoor residual spraying, larval source management, entomological
surveillance, net distribution
• Produce weekly, quarterly, annual and adhoc reports and epidemiological bulletins for timely decision making
• Support ZAMEP in preparation of annual reports, proposals, strategic plans and policy documents
• Draft abstracts and presentations for scientific conferences
• Support drafting of manuscripts for scientific journals
3. Support research and other epidemiological studies
• Support designing of operational research and epidemiological studies in keeping with ZAMEP strategic plan and priorities.
• Support writing of protocols and standard operating
procedures for operational research studies and epidemiological studies
• Provide supervision and technical support for operational research studies and epidemiological studies.
4. Capacity building for ZAMEP staff
• Develop and update training material on surveillance, data analysis, technical writing
• Support regular training for ZAMEP and MoH staff on data analysis, technical writing and scientific writing
Required qualifications and Experience:
Master's Degree plus three (3) year experience in
epidemiological/statistical analysis and modeling, preferably in an
international setting in the developing world.
Knowledge, skills and abilities: ••.
Ability to use advanced database and statistical analysis software (SAS, STATA, Epi Info, SPSS, etc.) Ability to conduct epidemiology/statistical analysis and mathematical modeling
Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to
perform multiple tasks simultaneously, namely the priority activities
and ability to work independently.
Competence in program management and proven ability to work in
effective communication with customers, partners and other public health
professionals
Knowledge of appropriate methods for the analysis of data and strong
experience in writing technical reports. Culturally astute, respectful
and tolerant
Demonstrated success managing and leading technical and administrative teams; Knowledge of USAID rules and regulations a plus.
